The 1464 featured solid-state circuitry. 'Instant-on' was a big deal, I guess, but as many of you know, early solid-state amps lacked...something. Transistors didn't 'fuzz' sweetly when overdriven (it was more like a splatter), and engineers hadn't yet learned how to contour the sound of these new amps for that tube 'warmth.' Even today, some solid-state amps use a tube or two or a better sound.
